Hario V60 filter papers

The original Hario V60 filter papers, made in Japan and cut to fit the V60 dripper exactly. Available in 01 and 02 sizes, in classic white or natural brown Misarashi.

The cone shape and Hario's own paper spec work together to hold back just enough flow for a clean, bright cup without stalling the drawdown. They're made from paper pulp with no chemicals and no glue, and they're FSC certified (FSC C161936). The white filters are oxygen-bleached rather than chlorine-treated, so there's no chlorine taint to rinse out. "Misarashi" is simply the Japanese word for unbleached, so the brown papers are the same pulp left in its natural state. Both are compostable and biodegradable, and both go in the compost bin with your spent grounds.

Size 01 takes roughly 8 to 16g of coffee for one to two cups. Size 02 takes 15 to 30g for one to four. If you brew mostly for yourself but occasionally for two, the 02 is the more flexible of the pair. Rinse the paper with hot water before you brew: it preheats the dripper, settles the filter into the cone, and clears any trace of paper taste.

What's the difference between V60 01 and 02 filters?

Size, and the dose that goes with it. The 01 suits 8 to 16g of coffee for one to two cups. The 02 suits 15 to 30g for one to four. The number is moulded into the dripper itself, so check your cone before ordering a bag of 100.

Can I use an 01 filter in an 02 dripper, or the other way round?

Not really. An 01 paper in an 02 dripper sits too low, and water runs down the wall past the coffee bed instead of through it. An 02 paper in an 01 dripper crumples at the sides and chokes the flow. Match the paper to the number on your dripper.

What does "Misarashi" mean?

It's the Japanese word for unbleached or undyed. The brown Misarashi papers are the same pulp as the white ones, just left in their natural state rather than oxygen-bleached.

Do white or brown filters taste different?

Rinsed properly, the difference is small. Hario's white papers are oxygen-bleached rather than chlorine-treated, so neither version carries a chemical taste. Some brewers find the unbleached papers need a slightly more thorough rinse to clear any papery note. Pick whichever you prefer and rinse either way.

Do I need to rinse V60 filters before brewing?

We'd recommend it. A rinse with hot water clears any paper taste, seats the filter properly against the cone, and preheats your dripper and server at the same time. It takes ten seconds and makes for a more consistent brew.

Are these the authentic Japanese-made Hario filters?

Yes. These are Hario's own papers, made in Japan, in the sizes and pack formats Hario produces for the V60 range.

What's the difference between the boxed 40s and the bagged 100s?

The paper is the same. The box of 40 keeps the filters flat and protected, which suits a kitchen shelf. The bag of 100 is better value if you brew every day. Hario's own codes tell you which is which: W is white, M is Misarashi, and the number before them is the count.

Are Hario V60 filters compostable?

Yes. They're plain paper pulp made without glue or chemicals, so the used filter and the spent grounds can go into your compost bin together.

Will these fit drippers other than the V60?

They'll work in most 60-degree cone brewers built around the V60 shape. Flat-bottom brewers like the Kalita Wave need wave papers instead, and a cone paper won't sit correctly in one.
